Board Member Duties

All Board members shall:

  • attend all meetings and audio conferences
  • be members of ISTA and  be encouraged to be members of NSTA
  • conduct an annual review of the Bylaws and constitution
  • review and approve the proposed budget as presented by the treasurer
  • attend meetings
  • approve the minutes of the previous meetings and the treasurer’s report

Previous Past-President

  • be a voting member of the Executive Board
  • assist immediate Past-President to prepare the annual ISTA conference

Immediate Past-President shall

  • be a voting member of the Executive Board
  • compile the slate of candidates for the annual election
  • in the absence of the President and President-Elect, preside over meetings of the Executive Board
  • plan and prepare the annual ISTA conference by developing a conference theme, planning and securing speakers, presentations, and workshops with the assistance of a committee and the Conference Coordinator

President shall:

  • be a voting member of the Executive Board
  • have general charge of the affairs of the ISTA and will represent ISTA in official and public relations capacities
  • Maintain contact with Idaho Department of Education liaisons and NSTA
  • be the liaison to NSTA
  • attend the regional or national NSTA annual meeting if funds allow
  • attend the National Congress on Science Education (NCSE) if funds allow
  • provide a written agenda for each business meeting
  • preside over all meetings of the ISTA Executive Board
  • approve all payment of bills and reimbursements
  • be in charge of all publications and press releases related to the ISTA activities.
  • ensure that each member of the Executive Board has a current copy of the Constitution, By-laws, and position duties
  • conduct the elections for new board members
  • appoint standing or ad Hoc committee chairpersons, subject to the ratification by the Executive Committee
  • be in charge of awards and related funding

President-Elect shall:

  • be a voting member of the Executive Board
  • actively support the President in an intern role
  • in the President’s absence, preside over meetings of the Executive Board
  • attend the National Congress on Science Education (NCSE) if funds allow
  • attend the regional or national NSTA annual meeting if funds allow

Executive Secretary  shall

  • be a voting member of the Executive Board
  • collect dues, pay authorized bills, and report the financial status to the Executive Board at business meetings
  • close the books on June 30, and present the results of an internal audit to the Executive Board within 90 days.  The audit will be done by the President, President-Elect, Treasurer, and Treasurer-elect if there is one that year.
  • propose and present, prior to June 30, a budget for the following fiscal year
  • maintain necessary documents pertaining to 501C3 status

Secretary/Communications Coordinator shall

  • be a voting member of the Executive Board
  • maintain a record of the official business and actions of the Executive Board
  • supply the minutes of business meetings to the webmaster and members of the board within fourteen (14) days of each Executive Board meeting
  • coordinate with the President the distribution of pertinent information
  • collect membership forms and maintain current membership list; report on membership at board meetings
  • Maintain a history of ISTA programs, recognitions, newsletters, minutes
  • serve as custodian of the corporate records and corporate seal
  • keep a register of the name and post office address of each corporate member

Regional Representatives shall

  • be a voting member of the Executive Board
  • assist in the organization of the state-wide conference when held in their region
  • recruit  new and encourage continuing membership members from regions
  • encourage regional activities, networking and support among regional members
  • actively seek members from their region for awards and recognition
  • actively collect articles for the ISTA Newsletter(s)
  • actively disseminate pertinent information and services for teacher enhancement
  • prepare and discuss regional reports at board meeting

Elementary Representative

  • be a voting member of the Executive Board
  • assist in the organization of the state-wide conference when held in their region
  • recruit  new and encourage continuing membership members from elementary teachers
  • encourage elementary science activities activities, networking and support among elementary science members
  • actively seek members from their elementary teachers for awards and recognition
  • actively collect articles for the ISTA Newsletter(s)
  • actively disseminate pertinent information and services for teacher enhancement
  • prepare and discuss regional reports at board meeting

Higher Education Representative

  • be a voting member of the Executive Board
  • assist in the organization of the state-wide conference when held in their region
  • recruit  new and encourage continuing membership members from higher education
  • encourage higher education members in networking and support
  • actively seek members from their elementary teachers for awards and recognition
  • actively collect articles for the ISTA Newsletter(s)
  • actively disseminate pertinent information and services for teacher enhancement
  • prepare and discuss regional reports at board meeting

Newsletter editor

  • non-voting member
  • distribute all publications and press releases under the direction of the President
  • disseminate to the membership a summary of the minutes of the board meetings and the financial report

Webmaster shall

  • non-voting member
  • create and actively  maintain the webpage under the direction of the President

Conference Coordinator shall

  • work with a conference planning committee (under direction of Immediate Past President) to ensure that the following is addressed:
    • Determine who will complete duties concerning program, building/room organizer, tech person, food, name tags, bags, rock raffle, field trips
    • make and send flyer once a week to teachers, principals, and superintendents
    • court vendors
    • registration
    • post conference wrap up

Note:  conference coordinator will document the method of donation and plenary speaker process, but the immediate past president will be the contact person for donation and plenary speakers.
